Kambos is a unique garden full of citrus trees, in the centre of Chios Island that spreads along the eastern coast. A set of agricultural-environment where housing, agriculture and complementary functions coexist in high and elaborate walls and narrow streets.
The area was developed as a suburban area of the castle from the Genoese in the 14th century, while citrus trees arrive on the island. The historical development of the island, some major events like the massacre of 1822, the frost in 1850 and finally the 1881 earthquake affected the overall social and architectural character of Kambos, which has always been a residential area of prominent families of Chios and of course the whole country. Today, Kambos is designated as a Historical Area by the Greek Ministry of Culture and remains an important architectural and cultural area where the cultivation of citrus fruits dominates in combination with other activities. |
